Labour Court declines 3% pay increase for Bord Na Mona workers

In 1995, the Labour Court did not recommend payment of a 3% local bargaining increase sought by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions and Bord Na Mona Group for 1,800 permanent and 600 seasonal Bord Na Mona employees. The Court signed its recommendation on 2 March 1995. The unions said workers had improved productivity and efficiency and that the company was profitable. Bord Na Mona cited competition, debt and the cost of the increase, saying it could lead to further job losses. The Court acknowledged the employees’ contribution and improved financial performance, but said the company’s financial position and future security remained a concern.
