In 1994, the Labour Court recommended an ex-gratia payment of £1,000 to a technician at the Irish Dairy Board who had deputised for a laboratory manager. The recommendation, dated 14 July 1994, did not recommend paying the manager’s rate or conceding two other workers’ assimilation claims. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union had argued that the technician took on most of the bacteriologist’s work. The Court found he had not carried out the full range of duties and noted that he retained double increments, but recommended the payment in exceptional circumstances. It found no grounds to recommend concession of the two assimilation claims.
