In 1993, the Labour Court recommended that Showerings (Ireland) Limited’s offer of compensation equal to one year of lost shift premium be accepted for two workers moved off shift work. The recommendation was dated 3 May 1993. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union and Amalgamated Transport and General Workers Union sought five times the annual loss, saying the change would reduce the workers’ earnings and pension entitlements. Showerings said there was insufficient work to keep them on shifts but that they would remain in permanent employment. The Court cited the circumstances of the change and company precedents in recommending acceptance of the offer.
