In 1994, the Labour Court recommended that Donnelly Mirrors examine alternatives to reduce job losses and carry out redundancies voluntarily as far as possible. It recommended terms of four weeks per year of service, inclusive of statutory entitlement, with a ceiling of two years’ earnings. The recommendation was signed on 17 January 1994. The dispute concerned 16 proposed redundancies in the company’s P.C.M. business. Donnelly Mirrors cited recession and lower sales; the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union opposed compulsory redundancies and said the proposed settlement was inadequate.
