The Labour Court recommended that a joint working party prioritise the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union’s claim to upgrade seven engineering operatives at Irish Rail. The recommendation was signed on 20 February 1992. The union said the workers carried out duties beyond their grade and sought £20 a week on the basic rate. Irish Rail argued the cost-increasing claim was precluded by pay agreements and cited its financial difficulties. It said a joint working party was already reviewing engineering operatives’ work practices. The Court considered that group the appropriate body to investigate the claim and strongly recommended it give the matter priority.
