In 1992, the Labour Court recommended that the Central Fisheries Board concede in full a claim by the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union to regrade a Senior Research Officer, effective from July 1988. The recommendation was dated 26 February 1992. After the Research Manager left in 1987, the officer took on staff supervision, budget preparation and control, expenditure responsibility, research coordination and scientific assessments without extra pay. The union said the work met the criteria for a more senior grade. The Board argued the claim should wait for decisions on the Marine Institute’s establishment and a staff scheme. The Court found considerable merit in the claim and criticised the delay in handling it. It recommended regrading the officer from July 1988, with the job title to be agreed.
