In 1991, the Labour Court recommended a phased move to a one-to-one ratio of pro-rata to full-time staff at Power Supermarkets Limited. The recommendation, dated 7 August 1991, was subject to the company’s conditions on permanent staff. The Irish National Union Of Vintners', Grocers' and Allied Trades Assistants opposed increasing part-time staffing, arguing that the company could maintain more full-time jobs. Power Supermarkets said its existing ratio put it at a disadvantage in productivity and customer service. The Court recommended that the ratio be achieved at each branch after discussions between the parties.
