In 1991, the Labour Court rejected the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union's pay claim on behalf of about 230 Irish Rail catering workers. The claim sought an increase of £7.75 per week under the public service pay agreement. Irish Rail argued the increase was barred by the agreement and that it lacked the resources to pay it. The Court found the cost-increasing claim was precluded under Clause 4 and rejected it, but made no judgment on its merits. It said the parties could discuss the claim when facilities were in place.
