In 1991, the Labour Court recommended that Iarnrod Eireann reject the National Bus And Rail Union’s claim to include the One Person Operation allowance in basic pay for pension and disability calculations. The recommendation was signed on 24 May 1991. The union said the allowance formed part of drivers’ regular earnings and cited the demands of operating D.A.R.T. trains without a guard. The company said its statutory pension scheme calculated benefits from basic pay, and including allowances would increase costs. The Court found no circumstances that warranted changing the standard pension or disability arrangements.
