In 1991, the Labour Court recommended that Iarnrod Eireann reject the National Bus And Rail Union’s claim for Sunday pay at two-and-a-half times the normal rate. The recommendation was signed on 24 May 1991. Rail operatives could choose whether to work Sundays, their rest day, and received double time. The union argued that Sunday workers should get the higher rate paid for rest-day work at Bus Eireann and Bus Atha Cliath. Iarnrod Eireann said the existing rate was reasonable and the extra cost could not be sustained. The Court agreed that double time was reasonable, considering Sunday pay generally.
