In 1991, the Labour Court accepted the union's claim that commission earnings should count to some degree in pension calculations for Irish Rail catering workers. It recommended that the parties agree a formula and refer it to the appropriate institution to amend the scheme. The recommendation was signed on 14 May 1991. The workers received a basic weekly wage plus commission from food or bar sales, while the pension scheme calculated benefits by reference to basic pay. The Court considered commission a distinct form of remuneration. Coras Iompair Eireann and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union were the parties to the dispute.
