Labour Court calls for talks on weekend funeral work at Corrigan And Sons

In 1990, the Labour Court recommended that Corrigan And Sons and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union discuss a fair allocation of weekend funeral driving work between management and employees, and agree rates. The recommendation was signed on 13 July 1990. The union, representing two drivers, sought compensation, saying management had taken weekend work that could otherwise have gone to them. The company said family members had long handled out-of-hours work requiring one person and that the drivers had suffered no loss of earnings. The Court found no grounds to prevent management from doing the work, while recognising that excluding full-time employees was a source of serious discontent.
