In 1990, the Labour Court recommended that Irish Times Limited introduce its proposed direct-debit system without further delay. The recommendation was signed on 22 June 1990. The dispute with the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union concerned direct debit for new accounts and customers in arrears. The union said the change could affect staff and should be discussed as part of wider technology plans. The Court found the issue fell under the 1981 agreement and, given the consultation already held, recommended implementation.
