In 1990, the Labour Court recommended redundancy terms of three weeks per year of service, inclusive of statutory payments, for staff affected by Youghal Carpet (Yarns) Limited's middle management redundancies. The terms were to be accepted by the staff concerned. The recommendation was signed on 11 June 1990. The company said falling prices and demand required savings to protect its viability, while the Irish Distributive And Administrative Trade Union opposed further redundancies among the group. The union said production volumes in 1989 were 43.75% higher than in 1980 while staff numbers had fallen by 21%. After one employee found other work and another died, the decision said two middle management positions would be made redundant.
