In 1990, the Labour Court recommended that two Monaghan Mushrooms Limited workers receive compensation equal to one year’s lost regular overtime after a change to tunnel-filling hours. The recommendation was signed on 9 April 1990. The workers had previously worked Mondays as well as Tuesday to Saturday. New equipment removed the need for Monday work. The union sought compensation of twice the annual loss, stated in its claim as £3,200, while the company said Monday work had been temporary. The Court said the arrangements had lasted a considerable period and recommended compensation equal to one year’s lost regular overtime. On weekend pay, it recommended that Services Industrial Professional Technical Union negotiate equitable terms for workers whose normal hours fell mainly on Saturdays and Sundays, while full-time workers were to continue receiving normal overtime rates.
