In 1989, the Labour Court did not recommend the Irish Transport And General Workers' Union's claim for a 5% special increase for five fitters, three apprentices and an electrician at Penn Athletic Products Company (Ireland). The recommendation was signed on 21 September 1989. The union said the workers had taken on extra responsibility for evacuating staff during a fire and noted that other employees received special allowances. The Court found the specified duties were not industrial responsibilities warranting additional payment. It said that if the tasks placed the workers at greater hazard than others, they should seek to amend the drill.
