In 1989, the Labour Court did not recommend conceding the Local Government And Public Services Union’s claim for a night-duty allowance for two Cuan Mhuire supervisors. The recommendation was signed on 4 September 1989. The union argued that their pay did not account for unsocial hours and pointed to allowances paid elsewhere in the public service. Cuan Mhuire, represented by the Department of Education, said the supervisors had been recruited specifically for night work and their pay covered the duties and hours. The Court said the supervisors were employed at a rate set for the job and did not recommend the union’s claim.
