In 1988, the Labour Court recommended that Cork Gas Company and Manufacturing Science Finance appoint an assessor to examine the grading of five workers. The recommendation was signed on 16 August 1988. The union said a 1985 reorganisation had left the workers' positions anomalous and sought changes to their placement on the company's pay scales. Cork Gas Company argued that the posts were correctly graded and that granting the claim would worsen its financial position. If the parties could not agree on an assessor, the Court was prepared to nominate one for them to appoint.
