In 1988, the Labour Court recommended a £2,050 payment for 32 general operatives and craft workers at Harp (Ireland) Ltd, if both sides accepted the recommendation. It was signed on 12 July 1988. The Amalgamated Transport and General Workers’ Union, the Amalgamated Union of Engineering Workers, the Electrical Trade Union (I) Ltd and the Union of Construction Allied Trades and Technicians sought compensation for lost earnings and a shorter working week. Harp (Ireland) Ltd said the payment would settle past earnings claims and supported its investment plan. The Court recommended that Harp (Ireland) Ltd’s offer on harmonisation of conditions be accepted, with further steps towards parity in working hours open to negotiation after 1990. It recommended that both sides accept the recommendation for the £2,050 payment to be made in full.
