In 1988, the Labour Court recommended that restaurant workers accept Arnotts PLC's offer on sick pay, following a claim by the Irish Transport And General Workers Union for improved terms based on service. The recommendation was signed on 7 July 1988. Arnotts' offer extended the carry-over period to three years and provided payment for the first three days of absence unless a worker had already had three periods of absence in that sick-pay year. The union said the proposal would worsen the scheme and cause financial hardship; Arnotts cited high absenteeism among restaurant staff.
