In 1988, the Labour Court rejected the Irish Transport And General Workers' Union's claim to regrade 15 assistant nurses at Saint Mary's Hospital Drumcar as house parents. The recommendation was signed on 11 May 1988. The union argued that the nurses' duties and experience justified the higher scale. Saint Mary's Hospital Drumcar said a revised scale had been agreed with the union in 1982 and that assistant nurses worked under staff nurses without requiring professional qualifications. The Court was not satisfied that the claimants were incorrectly graded.
