Labour Court declines to recommend Gilbeys profit-sharing scheme

In 1988, the Labour Court did not recommend conceding the Federated Workers' Union Of Ireland's claim for a profit-sharing scheme involving 300 employees at Gilbeys Of Ireland Limited, represented by the Federated Union of Employers. The recommendation was signed on 3 May. The union argued that profit sharing was common in the industry and offered to give up the existing holiday bonus in return. Gilbeys said its overall remuneration compared favourably with competitors, including because of the bonus, and argued that profits needed to be reinvested. The Court was not satisfied that the company's total remuneration package was out of line with comparators because it lacked a profit-sharing scheme.
