In 1988, the Labour Court recommended that Dublin Corporation make a further £50 ex-gratia payment to an apprentice electrician whose clothing was stolen while he worked at Cookstown waterworks reservoir. The recommendation was signed on 18 March 1988. The clothing was worth about £190. The Electrical Trade Union sought full compensation, while Dublin Corporation offered £50 under a scheme capped at that amount. The Court accepted the scheme’s limit but said an expectation of greater compensation had been created in this case.
