In 1988, the Labour Court recommended that members of the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union and Federated Workers Union of Ireland accept a proposed comprehensive agreement for the malting industry. The recommendation was signed on 18 March 1988. The Irish Maltsters Association said an extra 1% had been paid in the 26th wage round in return for concluding the agreement. The unions’ members had rejected the draft in a national ballot, although negotiators had recommended it. The Court noted that the agreement would not change existing industry practices or conditions.
