The Labour Court recommended that Maxol Limited’s proposals to close its Cork lubricating-oil depot from 1 January 1988 and introduce direct deliveries be accepted. The recommendation was signed on 9 December 1987. The Irish Transport and General Workers' Union opposed the plan, saying it could lead to two redundancies and that a 1985 assurance about keeping the oil lorry in Cork had not been honoured. Maxol said eliminating double handling would save costs and cited a £2 million loss in income after a petrol-price reduction. The Court considered the proposals reasonable.
