In 1987, the Labour Court recommended that Beaumont Hospital give porters clear notice of when rostered working would begin, after working arrangements at new locations had settled. It said current arrangements should continue in the meantime and that the parties should discuss implementation and compensation for those adversely affected. The recommendation was signed on 27 November 1987. The Irish Transport and General Workers' Union disputed the introduction of rostered working for porters at the new hospital. The Court cited the need for efficient hospital operations and the short notice given to the union.
