In 1987, the Labour Court recommended that Boylans Limited (Dun Laoghaire) withdraw a shop assistant's final warning for one month's working, then withdraw it fully if her performance was satisfactory. The recommendation was signed on 16 April 1987. The Irish Distributive and Administrative Trade Union said management was pressuring two shop assistants to leave and treating unionised staff less favourably. Boylans denied anti-union conduct and said the warning followed friction with the manager and concerns about the worker's conduct. The dispute went to the Court after conciliation failed. The Court noted a very poor industrial relations climate in the shop and said both sides should work to improve it through cooperation. It recommended a one-month withdrawal period for the warning, followed by full withdrawal if the worker's performance was satisfactory.
