In 1987, the Labour Court recommended that Irish Telephone Rentals recognise the Amalgamated Union of Engineering Workers (TASS) for negotiations in future wage rounds and other issues. The recommendation was signed on 16 April 1987. The dispute concerned the 26th wage round. The union sought talks on pay and working conditions for its members, while the company said it had reached a settlement with other unions and was unwilling to negotiate with AUEW (TASS). The Court also recommended that the unions coordinate their claims under Irish Congress of Trade Unions policy.
