In 1987, the Labour Court recommended that Henry Lyons & Company Limited restore its offer of statutory redundancy plus a 60% rebate, totalling £1,273.81, and that the Irish Distributive & Administrative Trade Union accept it in full settlement. The recommendation was signed on 16 April 1987. The dispute concerned the level of redundancy compensation for a charge hand in the company's sports department, whose employment ended by reason of redundancy in November 1985. Henry Lyons & Company Limited had offered the statutory amount of £796.13. The union initially sought 4.5 times that amount, later reducing its claim to three times the statutory amount. It said the claim followed a formula agreed with the company in 1982 and that it had compromised to recognise the company's difficulties and help maintain jobs. The company cited adverse trading conditions and increased costs. It said it had made 14 further workers redundant over the next nine months and could afford only statutory redundancy payments for them. The hearing was held in Carrick-on-Shannon on 31 March 1987.
