In 1987, the Labour Court recommended that the Irish Transport And General Workers' Union accept Adelphi Carlton Cinema Group's proposal for four late shows on one night a week at the Carlton complex. The recommendation was signed on 9 April 1987. The union said the arrangement went beyond the 1986 agreement and sought to withdraw from it. The company argued that concentrating late shows at the Carlton was necessary to keep them viable. The Court said four-screen showings on one night were economically justified, while two nights were not viable in the circumstances. It considered the arrangements voluntary and recommended accepting the company's proposals as a way to consolidate business and employment.
