In 1987, the Labour Court did not recommend the Irish Federation Of University Teachers' claim for automatic access to statutory lectureships at University College Dublin. The recommendation was signed on 6 April 1987. The union argued that a fixed ratio of junior to senior posts limited college lecturers' promotion prospects. UCD said automatic progression could undermine academic standards and its promotion process. The Court recommended that UCD abandon any fixed ratio and, for five years, increase the proportion of college lecturers promoted to senior level to match the proportion promoted from 1968 to 1973. It also recommended creating enough statutory lectureships to achieve that objective.
