In 1987, the Labour Court recommended that Quinnsworth Limited and the Irish Distributive and Administrative Trade Union negotiate an agreed definition of casual part-time staff. The recommendation was signed on 6 April 1987. The dispute concerned rates of pay for casual and part-time staff in the company's Cork stores. The union argued for pro-rata pay, while Quinnsworth said its offer was reasonable compared with payments to similar staff elsewhere. The Court agreed the company's offer was reasonable in that context and said the two staff categories should be clearly distinguished.
