In 1987, the Labour Court recommended that the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union and the Federated Workers' Union of Ireland agree to Roadstone Tiles and Masonry Limited's proposed changes at its Clondalkin tile works, subject to negotiations on compensation for lost overtime, meal and fatigue breaks, and clean-up time. The recommendation was signed on 22 January 1987. Roadstone said the changes would improve efficiency and help preserve jobs as demand for roof tiles fell. The unions objected, citing reduced earnings, changes to breaks and cleaning time, staffing concerns and earlier commitments. The company had offered £1,350 to each affected worker over changes to lunch breaks, but the Court made no award of that sum.
