In 1987, the Labour Court recommended that the union accept ERGAS LIMITED's offer for mileage up to 12,000 miles and that the rate above that threshold rise to 19p per mile. The recommendation was signed on 16 January 1987. It concerned the SALES MARKETING AND ADMINISTRATIVE UNION OF IRELAND's claim on behalf of two sales representatives for an improved mileage allowance. The union argued that the revised rates did not adequately reflect the costs of using cars for company business, while the company said its new scheme left the employees better off overall and had been accepted by other parties. The Court recommended that the company's offer for the first 12,000 miles be accepted, with the rate above that increased to 19p.
