In 1987, the Labour Court recommended that Advance Tyre Company Ltd apply a £10 weekly increase to all claimants from 1 May 1986. Its recommendation was signed on 16 January 1987. The Irish Transport and General Workers Union sought the full increase for all clerical staff, saying the earlier recommendation covered them all. Advance Tyre Company Ltd said it had understood the earlier claim to cover head office staff and proposed topping up depot workers only where bonus payments fell short. It also cited trading losses. The Court recommended applying the increase to all claimants from 1 May 1986, in light of severe economic circumstances in the industry.
