In 1987, the Labour Court recommended a six-month pay pause followed by a 6% wage increase for nine months from 1 July 1986 for about 120 seafaring staff at George Bell Ship Management Limited. The recommendation was signed on 14 January 1987. The Federated Workers' Union of Ireland had sought an 8% increase for 12 months. George Bell Ship Management Limited offered staged weekly increases tied to revised working arrangements and cited difficult trading conditions and savings targets. The Court recommended the pay pause and 6% increase, with discussions on the company's four proposed requirements to take place separately.
