In 1987, the Labour Court recommended a 7% pay increase for workers at Irish Industrial Gases from 1 September 1986, for 15 months. The recommendation was signed on 9 January 1987. The Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union had sought a 10% rise over 12 months, extra annual leave, a shorter working week, optional weekly pay for clerical staff and average overtime pay during holidays for industrial workers. The Court did not recommend the extra leave, reduced hours or holiday overtime pay. It recommended flexible working arrangements and further talks on optional weekly pay, with implementation from 1 September 1987 if agreed. It also recommended a clause preventing further cost increases.
