In 1987, the Labour Court recommended adjusting a maintenance helper’s rate at St. Patrick’s Teacher Training College to the basic construction industry rate. The recommendation was signed on 6 January 1987. The Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union had sought parity with a vocational education committee rate. The Court said there was no good basis for that comparison, but found the worker’s duties justified the construction industry basic rate. The college said he mainly assisted a carpenter with unskilled tasks under supervision.
