The Labour Court upheld a recommendation that Arbuckle Smith Ireland Limited pay an additional £500 in redundancy compensation to a worker with 20 years’ service. The decision was signed on 6 January 1987. The Marine Port and General Workers' Union appealed the Rights Commissioner’s recommendation on the worker’s behalf. The worker had received £1,500 in statutory redundancy pay. The union said other staff had received twice the statutory limit; Arbuckle Smith Ireland Limited cited a decline in trade, rising costs and repeated break-ins, and disputed that comparison.
