The WRC recommended that a hospital repay an administrative worker the amount deducted from her arrears for a training allowance and continue the allowance while she performs training duties. The recommendation was dated 24 July 2024. The worker said the hospital had deducted €27,677.92 from back pay and stopped the allowance after paying it for 14 years.
The hospital said the allowance had compensated the worker while she was paid at a lower grade and was no longer due after her post was upgraded. The adjudication officer found nothing to show she had been told the allowance was part of that arrangement. The officer said the hospital should have sought clarification or appealed before making the deduction, and that it was unreasonable to assume the worker knew how the earlier recommendation would be implemented.
