The Labour Court ruled for Teagasc in its appeal of Paula Reid’s equal-pay complaint, setting aside a €40,000 compensation award made by a WRC adjudication officer. The Court’s determination was dated 19 September 2024.

Reid said she and Jim Grant shared a Statistician title, qualifications, manager and role profiles, and did comparable work. Teagasc argued that Grant’s Senior Research Officer role involved broader responsibilities.

The Court found that Grant undertook broader research design, delivered more advanced statistical training, had more peer-reviewed publications, contributed as a full member of large research projects and served on an external committee. It concluded that Reid had not established that they did the same or similar work, a requirement for her equal-pay claim. The complaint was not well founded, and the earlier WRC decision was set aside.
