Waterford bar ordered to pay €500 after Traveller woman refused service

By Donal Gilhooly

Workplace decision ·

Equality Officer Bernadette Treanor found that Ellen Delaney was discriminated against on the Traveller community ground when she was refused service at Ulysses Café Bar in Waterford. In a decision dated 11 December 2006, Treanor ordered Liam Crotty, trading as Ulysses Café Bar, to pay Delaney €500.

Delaney and four others had gone to the bar after being told there was a private function at another pub. They had three rounds before staff told them they could not be served and asked them to leave. Crotty said staff believed the group might cause trouble and cited a private function, but the decision found there was no private function and no evidence the group was likely to cause trouble. Treanor concluded they were asked to leave because of Delaney’s membership of the Traveller community.
