The Workplace Relations Commission has directed that John Finucane’s age discrimination complaint against the Royal Irish Academy Of Music proceed to a substantive investigation. The preliminary decision is dated 23 July 2026. Finucane alleges the Academy discriminated against him over its retirement-age position and proposed fixed-term contract after retirement. The Academy argued the complaint was outside the statutory time limit and that he had not established a prima facie case within that period. The WRC found the Academy had notice during the statutory period that Finucane believed he was being discriminated against on age grounds. The decision does not determine whether discrimination occurred or whether he will succeed.
