The Workplace Relations Commission awarded teacher Paula Caro Almohalla €34,435 after finding that Academic Bridge Limited unfairly dismissed her through a redundancy process. The decision was dated 29 April 2026. The officer found that the teaching work continued and that the company advertised teaching roles at lower hourly rates while consulting on redundancies. The company said financial difficulties after a change of ownership required restructuring.
Almohalla said the redundancy process was used to impose inferior terms, without meaningful consultation or fair selection. The adjudicator found that timetable changes were implemented before consultation ended and described as non-negotiable. She also found no objective selection process and concluded the company had not shown a genuine redundancy or fair dismissal.
The officer assessed her financial loss at €43,044, then reduced the compensation by 20% because Almohalla had not made as many job applications as the officer considered reasonable. She found no contribution by Almohalla to the dismissal. The officer also did not allow a redundancy appeal, noting that Almohalla accepted receiving statutory redundancy pay; the decision does not identify the appellant in its body.
