The Workplace Relations Commission ordered Independent Clinical Services Limited trading as Scottish Nursing Guild to pay Ciara O’Grady €7,000 compensation after finding her discrimination complaint well founded. The respondent conceded the claim at the hearing. In a decision dated 14 July 2025, WRC adjudication officer Andrew Heavey considered O’Grady’s application to register as an ICU agency nurse. The company had deemed her ineligible after maternity leave under an intended requirement for three years of continuous service, which the written policy did not specify. The company said its eligibility criteria were intended to protect patient care; O’Grady argued that competence could be assessed without disadvantaging women returning from protected leave.
