The Workplace Relations Commission ordered Kilkenny And Carlow Education And Training Board to pay teacher Mary Roche €2,432.52 in compensation after finding she was underpaid for summer work. The decision, dated 17 July 2024, also rejected her discrimination and victimisation complaints.

Roche said the board reduced her critical illness pay during the summer while she was receiving cancer treatment. The board argued that teaching hours were not payable in summer and said medical reports did not recommend that she work from home.

The WRC found that teaching hours and 20 resource hours were not payable during the summer, but Roche was owed payment for 35 resource hours a week rather than 24. It found no evidence that the pay reduction was related to her disability, and said it had no jurisdiction to consider an earlier accommodation complaint because it fell outside the relevant period. It also found she was not victimised.
