The Workplace Relations Commission found John Murphy had not established age discrimination after Bausch Health Ireland Limited declined to renew his post-retirement fixed-term contract. The complaint failed on its merits. Murphy had agreed to a one-year contract after retiring, and the WRC found he knew it would expire in October 2023. He argued that the company had not objectively justified refusing to renew it; the company said his employment ended when the fixed term expired. Adjudication Officer Niamh O'Carroll dated the decision 5 July 2024. She found the company had no obligation to renew the contract and that Murphy’s employment ended because it expired.
