Currys wins WRC race discrimination, harassment and victimisation case

By Aoife Loughran

Historic decision · Decision date:

Place: no local area assigned from the source.

Kuol Kuol’s complaints of race discrimination, harassment and victimisation against Currys Ireland Limited were not well founded, the Workplace Relations Commission has decided. No award was recorded. Kuol said workplace treatment including restrictions on access to a smoking area, bag checks and comments by managers was linked to his race. Currys denied the complaints and said the actions related to store policies and operational issues. The adjudicator found insufficient evidence that Kuol was treated less favourably because of his race, and found the harassment allegations unproven. The WRC accepted that his earlier complaint was a protected act and that dismissal was adverse treatment, but found no evidence the dismissal was a reaction to that complaint.
