A landlord was ordered to pay €6,000 after the Workplace Relations Commission found he discriminated against a tenant by refusing to submit documents needed for her Housing Assistance Payment application. The decision was dated 14 February 2024.
Ngnamkey Mhozou Florence Kabran told the WRC she had rented the property since 2021 and was paying €650 a month. She said the refusal meant she lost €6,000 in HAP assistance over 12 months. Her landlord, Syed Mubarak Ali, did not attend the hearing, and the adjudication officer relied on her uncontested evidence.
The WRC found discrimination on the housing assistance ground and directed payment of €6,000 compensation, corresponding to the rental deficit over 12 months. Housing assistance discrimination in accommodation occurs when a person is treated less favourably because they receive or may receive housing support.
