WRC rejects former Garda chief superintendent’s age discrimination complaint

The Workplace Relations Commission rejected Colette Quinn’s age discrimination complaint over her retirement from An Garda Síochána at 60, finding the mandatory retirement rule reasonable and proportionate. The decision, dated 27 February 2025, followed Quinn’s argument that her civilian successor could remain in the role until 70 and that she had been denied an opportunity to compete for it. The Commission accepted the force’s rationale around consistent retirement ages, succession planning and operational efficiency. It found the civilian successor belonged to a distinct public-service cohort, and said the lack of a competition did not displace the wider policy aim.
